Officeworks is an Australian office supply that is now operating under the parent company Wesfarmers. The formation of the store’s concept was from the American office supply retailing company Office Depot. The company is considered a “category killer” in the category of office supplies.
History of Officeworks
Officeworks opened in June 1994 as a small Richmond store, established by the company Coles Myers (became Coles Group then acquired by the Australian conglomerate Wesfarmers). The IT retailer Harris technology became a subsidiary of the company a few years after its opening.
A subsidiary of Office Depot, Viking Australia was purchased by then Coles Myers and merged with Officeworks that led to the formation of Officeworks Direct – which is now known as Officeworks Business.
When Wesfarmers acquired the Coles Group in November 2007, both Officeworks and Harris Technology are now under the Wesfarmers’ Home Improvement and Office Supplies division.
The company underwent a major rebranding – from logo, retail section names, uniforms, and including the slogan ‘Lowest Prices Everyday.’ Officeworks also implemented a “Lowest Price Guarantee,” similar to Bunnings’ (under the same parent company, Wesfarmers), in which the company promised to beat the competitor’s price of an identical item by 5%. The change of slogan happened in 2012, to ‘Big Ideas. Lowest Prices.’ and began offering free Wi-Fi access in all stores.
As of 2017, it dominated the $12 billion stationery and office equipment market in Australia, as well as a host of other segments.
